The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about Artificial Intelligence
In a recent Tweet by Vicki Hanson, President of ACM, Vicki quotes an article by Sean Illing which recently appeared in the Vox online magazine. 17 experts where asked how worried we should be about artificial intelligence. There was no consensus. Disagreement about the appropriate level of concern, and even the nature of the problem, is broad. Some experts consider AI an urgent danger; many more believe the fears are either exaggerated or misplaced. The following quotes represent in essence a US view. It would be interesting to learn, how the German computer science community sees these issues.

Gerhard Schimpf
Gerhard Schimpf, the recipient of the ACM Presidential Award 2016 and 2024 the Albert Endes Award of the German Chapter of the ACM, has a degree in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe. As a former IBM development manager and self-employed consultant for international companies, he has been active in ACM for over four decades. He was a leading supporter of ACM Europe, serving on the first ACM Europe Council in 2009. He was also instrumental in coordinating ACM’s spot as one of the founding organizations of the Heidelberg Laureates Forum.
